Designing environments for people with dementia is the focus of our new video, featuring ideas and guidance from leading industry experts about how to make the built environment more dementia-friendly.

What’s the link between dementia care and Altro?

Floors and walls are key design components of any interior space and Altro’s slip-resistant safety flooring and hygienic wall cladding can be part of the solution for dementia-friendly environments.
We are working with industry experts to raise the awareness of the need for appropriate design in dementia care settings and have now started to integrate new expert knowledge into our product development to help support customer requirements. We’re committed to continuing our work in dementia and mental health to help deliver a good quality of life through the built environment. What the experts say:

Dementia expert, Emeritus Professor Mary Marshall, from the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre has over 20 years’ experience designing environments for people with dementia and highlights the importance of this issue in the film. She comments:

“The number of people with dementia is set to increase dramatically as our population ages. Appropriate design is the key to tackling changing needs – we now have the knowledge and skills to create much safer environments so that people can navigate their way around more easily. This design can be effectively applied for people in care homes, public spaces and even their own homes helping them remain independent for longer.”

Associate Architect, Liz Fuggle, from BPA Architecture brings a wealth of expertise from her experience managing projects for clients within the healthcare sector. In the video she explains how each feature of the interior plays a significant role from the floor up to the ceilings and everything in between:

“The right colour, tone and Light Reflectance Values are important to consider”, says Liz, “as problems with perception can lead people to think that changes of tone or colour are actually steps, creating trip hazards and confusion. Way finding and clear demarcation of areas can also make a real difference to quality of life.”
